for the 2025 German-Australian Opera Grant
More Than Opera invites applications for the
21st German-Australian Opera Grant
Up to twelve candidates (6 male & 6 female singers)
with opera stage experience will be selected for the
Semi-Finals on 15 November 2024
On the same day four Finalists will be chosen to compete at the
Opera Finale on 16 November 2024
The Edge, Federation Square, Melbourne
The winner will be granted a twelve-month employment contract (August 2025 - July 2026)
with the renowned Hessisches Staatstheater Wiesbaden plus one month’s German tuition at the
Goethe-Institut in Berlin and one month’s work experience at the Opera House in June 2025.

The 2025 German-Australian Opera Grant
This Grant includes a one-year employment (junior) contract with the HESSISCHES STAATSTHEATER WIESBADEN (August 2025 - July 2026), one month of German language tuition at the Goethe-Institut (July 2025) and one month of work experience at the Opera House (June 2025) for an insight into procedures prior to the official start. An adequate amount of money will ensure that living costs are covered. The Grant recipient also receives a cheque for $5000, which will help in the preparation stage for the time overseas.
The Grant will be given to an outstanding emerging Australian opera singer in the early stage of their professional life with operatic stage experience capable of meeting the high quality standards of this major German Opera House.
The recipient must have previous operatic stage experience. It is necessary that the Grant winner has a sound knowledge of German, or if not, is prepared to complete an intensive German language course well before departure.
The Grant incurs the obligation to perform at two events: an operatic reception for Sponsors of the Grant before leaving for Germany and upon return an operatic reception or ‘Master Class’ to provide feedback on the overseas experience.
